In an official letter to the agency, the makers of Cialis and Levitra have said they will appeal the findings of a clinical trial that found that those drugs were more effective in treating erectile dysfunction than the older drugs. The FDA's warning letter says that the study did not find any evidence that Cialis could improve erectile function. The letter also says the findings could be interpreted as "unjustifiable".

It also said that it had not considered whether the drug could be used to treat pulmonary hypertension. It said that it had not found enough evidence to prove that Cialis could improve erectile function.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Eli Lilly and Company said it had not yet been able to find any evidence that Viagra could improve erectile function.
"The FDA has failed to consider whether the use of Viagra could improve erectile function," Eli Lilly said. "Because it has not had a significant clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of Cialis and Levitra, it cannot say for certain that the drug will be effective for this indication."
A spokeswoman for Pfizer, which invented the term "erectile dysfunction," said the company would make an official decision this month about whether it would be allowed to use Viagra in a new indication for erectile dysfunction.
"The FDA has been open about the safety of Viagra in treating pulmonary hypertension," she said.
